The fuel, which is used in the nuclear reactors or in the nuclear bombs, is called the nuclear fuels. The nuclear fuels are highly radioactive. After being operated in the different modes, some of the residue remains. This residue from the reactors is also radioactive. Thus, the waste of the nuclear power station is also very hazardous to all forms of the life on the earth. So it is very important to dispose off the nuclear waste. Here we discuss how to dispose the nuclear waste.
Nuclear power is characterised by the very large amount of energy available from a very small amount of fuel. The amount of waste is also relatively small. However, much of the waste is radioactive and therefore must be carefully managed as hazardous waste.
Since the radioactive wastes are essentially created in a nuclear power reactor, it is accepted that they are the responsibility of the country which uses uranium to generate power. There is no moral or legal basis for the responsibility to be elsewhere.
Nuclear Waste Disposal:
The nuclear waste pollutes the environment. The main sources of the nuclear wastes are nuclear reactors, mines of the radioactive substances, nuclear power stations, laboratories etc. The nuclear wastes are highly radioactive in nature. If not disposed off properly, it can cause damage to all living organisms. Presently, the nuclear wastes is disposed off by sealing it in corrosion proof containers which are then stored underground in specially designed deep concrete vaults. The concrete vaults are covered with the lead to avoid the leakage of the nuclear radiations.
Damaging Effects of Nuclear Wastes:
Nuclear wastes usually contain more than one highly radioactive materials. The damaging effects of the nuclear wastes are as follows:
(i) Radioactive nuclear wastes pollute the earth. If the nuclear wastes come in contact with the underground water, the radiations get absorbed in the water and then enter our bodies through food chains.
(ii) Nuclear wastes release high-energy radiations, which are harmful for the living beings. The radiations can cause diseases like cancer, leukemia, etc.
Ways to Adopt for Nuclear Waste Disposal:
To prevent us by the nuclear radiations, we can take some precautions. We can minimize the nuclear waste by adopting the following techniques:
(i) The nuclear reactors should be located at a place, which is very far from the high population areas.
(ii) The nuclear reactor should be provided with a thick coating of the radiation absorbing material and enclosed in the thick concrete shield to prevent any radiation leakage.
(iii) The building and the entire structure for the nuclear reactor should be earth quake proof.
(iv) We should start using the non-conventional sources of energy.
